    Advantages of aluminum modular ramps

    Last updated 5 years ago

The advantages of modular aluminum ramps are numerous. The first and most obvious reason is the minimal maintenance that is required to keep the ramps looking good. Wood ramps need constant maintenance to keep them from splitting and pealing. Steel ramps rust very quickly when outside. Aluminum Modular ramps also have a mesh surface that allows snow and ice to fall thought the ramp. This helps in the winter and the ramps are much safer because they are far less slippery than wood. If a wood ramp is built, plywood should never be used as the surface. Plywood is extremely slippery when wet. Another reason aluminum modular ramps are better is their ability to be moved and re-assembled quickly with minimal cost. This is really important if someone is renting or planning to move.

Installing a lift is not for everyone

    Last updated 5 years ago

I sometimes forget how complicated the stuff we do is. There are never two jobs that are the same. I can hardly believe that someone without experience would tackle installing a lift or elevator. I have been doing this for over 20 years and I still have questions about how some of our projects will all come together. Fortunately I can rely on my past experience combined with that of my co-workers to come up with a solution. Please be sure you know what you are doing before you attempt to install any piece of lifting equipment. Your life or a loved one's life could be on the line.

    Is Your Home Visitable?

    Last updated 5 years ago

The term Visitability is a term that is spoken to describe a home that is able to be visited by people of all abilities. The term was developed in HAHB's CAPS course (Certified Aging in Place Specialist). Home builders are more conscious about people with limited mobility needing easier access to homes and around the home. As a rule of thumb, for a home to be visitable it must not have a threshold so a wheelchair of walker can roll over it, 31 ¾” doorways, and the home must also have a bathroom on the first floor that allows someone with a disability to access it. Do wheelchair lifts purchased over the internet meet code?

    Last updated 5 years ago

Buying wheelchair lifts off the internet has real risks. We are seeing this happening time and time again where a person will buy a wheelchair lift from an internet site to only be told that it will not pass inspection and then they find out they cannot return it. As hard as we try educating people about the risks of buying these products, the cheap price is often too hard to resist. The websites will tell you that they are "commercial lifts" that will meet code. My question is what code? Do you know what code your state follows?

The lifts we have been seeing are poorly built and are lacking code complaint items such as: compliant door interlocks, emergency stop buttons, emergency alarms, emergency lighting, short side guards, and no safety pan. The other issue is who will be installing the lift? In all the states we work in, a licensed mechanic must do the installation and then stand inspection with an inspector. There is no way around the licensure issue. If you are in doubt about the rules for your state, please call the state elevator inspector and ask the question. What seems to be an inexpensive way of getting a wheelchair lift installed can become very costly in the end.
